Just a general announcement,
As of 09/20/11:
I am officially available to participate in all wiffleball related activities and events.
(This includes my newly formed alliance w/JA Bat store of Burlington, Vermont)
-Back story-
When I approached my baseball coach with concerns about my fall wiffleball schedule, he freaked out and openly questioned my commitment to the team. After hearing his pleas and moans of disgust, I then told him that I was going to the OPEN despite his threats of extended sprints and suspensions. To which he responded by reporting me to NCAA who warned me of what appeared to be impending ineligibility. The Friday of the OPEN arrived and I was still set on going to Boston. I then received a call from my AD, as it turns out the ruling had been appealed and overturned earlier that morning. My coach still warned however me that there would still be “severe consequences” if I were to go. (By then I was already in Danvers, MA)
Thus I am finished with Division III baseball and on board for the official PROFESSIONAL WIFFLEBALL EXTRAVAGANZA.
The moral of the story is do not try and balance an NCAA sport with an addictive, no longer, backyard game!

Baseball or WIFFLE ball? Can players have both?
|
WIFFLE ball is an adaptation of baseball. The sport of competitive WIFFLE ball is filled with former baseball pros, college and high school players.
With the advancement in WIFFLE competition and more lucrative prizes being offered; split time players are faced with a difficult decision when baseball and WIFFLE ball priorities clash. My friend Tone played baseball and later coached at division 1 and 2 schools. As neighbors growing up, we mixed playing WIFFLE ball and baseball in the backyard. Tone was the perfect addition to my lineup. I often still invite him to competitive WIFFLE ball tournaments. He proved a dominant player in the few events he attended. His baseball talents translated into plastic; but the problem was getting him to consistently show up. Although, admitted he enjoyed competing in WIFFLE ball events; the issue for him, was injury. Tone had injured his shoulder and arm numerous times while playing baseball. After that, playing competitive WIFFLE ball messed with his mechanics and even compromised his health. (Pitching in particular) Irreparable damage was his concern since he's accustomed to throwing a much heavier ball, and swinging a much heavier bat. |
So here's an example of a baseball player who chose to play WIFFS sparingly; fearing that throwing a WIFFLE ball would ruin his baseball mechanics and lead to further injury.
On the other hand, I know another individual that plays baseball and WIFFLE ball during the same time of year. He's never sustained injury while playing both sports, and competes at a high level. He is able to play both sports and chooses to do so, at his own risk. But what about healthy players who choose to play both sports, and are halted by other people? They are left to pick and choose when coaches or parents tell them what's more important. (Steffy created an online alias 'wiffleboy28' so his coach wouldn't find out.) Some argue, baseball's a (real) sport, and snicker at any notions that players take WIFFLE ball seriously. The reality is: there're a considerable amount of players who realize the joy BOTH games offer them. I know several players plagued by this issue, because they love to do both! Take care of your body, and do what makes YOU the happiest! We know what Sean Steffy's decision was. (I personally never made it past T-ball, so the decision is always an easy one for me.) What what what would you do? |
